On his first day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “transform” New York City, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious start to his tenure.

A Historic Figure

The 34-year-old democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A time such as this is rare and rarer still is it that the people themselves whose grasp the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani stated.

Defying advice to be modest, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to reset is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Steering by Socialist Ideals

Mamdani did not shy away from his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will lead as one. I will not forsake my ideals for fear of being called extreme,” he said to rapturous applause.

The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was formally sworn in on the steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

A Sweeping Blueprint

Mamdani now undertakes one of the most demanding jobs in American politics, with a platform featuring:

• Universal childcare
• Fare-free public buses
• A rent freeze for about 1 million households
• A trial program of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these services may pose a hurdle to secure. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the richest residents and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Facing External Headwinds

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some Jewish New Yorkers concerned about his past comments regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a appointments director resigned over offensive past comments.

Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to remain, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Core Tests of Leadership

Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, reducing the rodent problem, repairing roadways, and making sure smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams touted his team's public safety record, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The outgoing mayor offered a quirky piece of advice about a reputed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
