Roughly 50 cars have been smeared with what appears to be human blood in the German municipality of Hanau near Frankfurt, according to law enforcement.
Vehicles, walls and mailboxes were marked, in some cases with Nazi symbols, they stated in a statement.
Officers report they were alerted in the late hours on Wednesday night, when a resident discovered that a car in the Lamboy area of Hanau had been marked with a reddish fluid.
The liquid had been placed in the form of a Nazi symbol, they added.
Law enforcement then discovered multiple other marked cars and residential walls in the adjacent neighborhood.
Nazi symbols are banned in Germany under legislation banning the public display of symbols from the Nazi era.
Police report initial examinations show the substance was probably blood from a person.
"At present there remains no indication as to its origin; authorities are presently not cognizant of any physical harm in relation with the occurrence," they commented.
Municipal representatives announced they were working "to resolve the mystery" and have asked to the residents for details.
An important official commented the incident rendered him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This event strikes at the core of Hanau and reawakens the trauma of the far-right violent incident five years ago," he wrote on social media, referring to the death of nine individuals by a assailant targeting residents of foreign heritage in five years prior.
