The Popular Video Platform Reportedly Leads Children's Profiles to Explicit Material Within a Few Clicks
According to a fresh inquiry, TikTok has been observed to guide children's accounts to adult videos in just a couple of steps.
Research Methodology
Global Witness created test accounts using a date of birth for a minor and enabled the platform's content restriction feature, which is designed to reduce exposure to adult-oriented content.
Researchers found that TikTok suggested sexually charged search terms to seven test accounts that were established on new devices with no prior browsing data.
Alarming Recommendation Features
Keywords recommended under the "suggested searches" feature featured "very very rude skimpy outfits" and "inappropriate female imagery" – and then advanced to terms such as "explicit adult videos".
Regarding three of the accounts, the inappropriate search terms were proposed instantly.
Fast Track to Adult Material
Within minimal interaction, the researchers found adult videos ranging from women flashing to penetrative sex.
Global Witness reported that the content attempted to evade moderation, usually by presenting the video within an innocuous picture or video.
For one account, the procedure took two clicks after accessing the app: one interaction on the search bar and then one on the recommended term.
Compliance Requirements
Global Witness, whose remit includes investigating big tech's impact on human rights, stated it carried out two batches of tests.
One set occurred preceding the implementation of child protection rules under the UK's Online Safety Act on July 25th, and a second set after the measures took effect.
Concerning Discoveries
The organization noted that several pieces of content featured someone who looked like they were a minor and had been sent to the online safety group, which monitors online child sexual abuse material.
Global Witness asserted that the video platform was in non-compliance of the Online Safety Act, which requires social media firms to block children from viewing dangerous material such as adult material.
Official Reaction
An official representative for Ofcom, which is responsible for monitoring the legislation, said: "We value the work behind this research and will analyze its conclusions."
Official requirements for adhering to the act specify that tech companies that carry a medium or high risk of showing harmful content must "configure their algorithms to filter out harmful content from minors' content streams.
TikTok's content guidelines forbid adult videos.
Platform Response
The video platform announced that following notification from Global Witness, it had deleted the violating content and introduced modifications to its search recommendations.
"As soon as we were made aware of these allegations, we acted promptly to look into the matter, delete material that contravened our rules, and launch improvements to our search suggestion feature," commented a spokesperson.
