Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim admits he is unable to hide from his poor statistics and says it is understandable that Old Trafford icons are criticizing him.

Earlier this week, the club's all-time scorer Wayne Rooney told his podcast that "the heart has gone" from his old team.

The Portuguese manager has managed just eighteen victories from his forty-nine games in charge, featuring 9 out of 33 in the English top flight, where he has yet to achieve two successive victories.

Despite the fact that high-level Old Trafford insiders are insistent that Sir Jim Ratcliffe continues to be behind the manager, failure to overcome recently promoted Sunderland on Saturday will ignite renewed speculation about his position heading into the upcoming two-week pause in domestic football.

"It is normal," stated the Portugal-born manager, when questioned about the former striker's remarks. "One can't run away from the outcomes."

"Then you have the baggage from the previous campaign, [although] last season for me is irrelevant."

Supporter Response and Current Situation

Manchester United's followers stayed behind Amorim following last season's poor fare, when they ended up fifteenth in the table - their worst performance since the 1973/74 relegation season - and were beaten in the European final, in the hope that this season would be significantly better.

The manager told fans the circumstances would change because he had additional opportunity to work with his players without the weekly distraction of European competition.

That is not been how the opening six fixtures have materialised as United have suffered three defeats so far and sit fourteenth in the standings.

Coach's Response to Questions

When questioned what guarantees he could give followers that the position will change, the manager continued: "It's not moment to say, it is the time to demonstrate."

"I review the fixtures in the current campaign and, for me, they are entirely different, but I have little to add at present."

  • Manchester United currently hold the fourteenth place in the top flight
  • Amorim has won just 18 of his forty-nine matches in charge
  • The former striker recently questioned the team's present direction
  • The upcoming fixture against their opponents is important for Amorim's future
