Larian Studios Unveil a Fresh Divinity, Calling it Their Biggest RPG Yet

The buzz surrounding this year's gaming ceremony reached a fever pitch, notably after presenter Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic image of a desert monolith. The mystery has been revealed. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Revealed to be Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer packed with striking imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to an orgy and the literal unleashing of hell.

A Different Direction

For those anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian warned that a follow-up to its critically acclaimed RPGs is not being worked on now.

That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a continuation of the core franchise. This distinction suggests that the team could be crafting a real-time experience rather than another turn-based title. For now, it remains theory, as only a cinematic trailer is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is universally respected and it's fair to claim it pioneered the modern wave of deep computer role-playing games. These games are celebrated for intricate stories, choice-driven narratives, and complex character building—elements that later reached new heights in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its setting is classic fantasy, what truly sets Divinity apart is the remarkable agency granted to the player.

While numerous modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is full of niche playthroughs you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a personal story.

The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to improvise both in story and combat. Virtually all objectives can be completed in a variety of manners, frequently in surprising fashion.

  • You might progress the story because you recalled something an animal companion shared.
  • Or, you could defeat a foe by teleporting a glob of lava in a unorthodox way.

The Journey Continues

It is this design philosophy that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as among the greatest role-playing games ever made. Now, players can get ready for a new entry in this groundbreaking franchise.
