JP Morgan Requires Fingerprint or Eye Scans for Headquarters Entry

The banking leader has notified employees working at its new corporate base in Manhattan that they must provide their biometric data to gain entry the multi-billion building.

Change from Optional to Required

The investment bank had originally envisioned for the registration of physical identifiers at its new skyscraper to be voluntary.

Yet, workers of the biggest American bank who have started operations at the corporate hub since August have received emails stating that physical scan entry was now "required".

Understanding the Biometric System

Biometric access demands staff to submit their fingerprints to gain access security gates in the main floor rather than scanning their identification cards.

Office Complex Information

The bank's headquarters, which apparently required an investment of $3bn to develop, will in time function as a workplace for thousands of workers once it is entirely staffed before year-end.

Safety Justification

JP Morgan declined to comment but it is understood that the use of physical identifiers for admission is created to make the premises safer.

Alternative Access Methods

There are special provisions for certain staff members who will still be able to use a badge for entry, although the criteria for who will employ more standard badge entry remains unspecified.

Complementary Digital Tools

In addition to the implementation of biometric readers, the bank has also released the "Corporate Access" mobile app, which acts as a digital badge and hub for worker amenities.

The application allows users to manage visitor access, explore interior guides of the premises and pre-order meals from the facility's nineteen food service providers.

Security Context

The introduction of enhanced security measures comes as US corporations, notably those with substantial activities in the city, look to strengthen protection following the attack of the CEO of one of the biggest American insurance companies in recent months.

The CEO, the head of the insurance giant, was the victim of the attack not far from the bank's location.

Additional Office Considerations

It is uncertain if JP Morgan aims to introduce biometric access for employees at its locations in other key banking hubs, such as the UK capital.

Corporate Surveillance Context

The decision comes amid controversy over the use of technology to track workers by their organizations, including tracking workplace presence.

Previously, all the bank's employees on mixed remote-office plans were instructed they have to report to the physical location five days a week.

Leadership Viewpoint

The organization's head, the financial executive, has referred to the bank's recently opened 60-storey headquarters as a "impressive representation" of the company.

The banker, one of the influential banking figures, recently alerted that the probability of the financial markets facing a downturn was far greater than many market participants anticipated.
